Pounamu Care Guide
Everday Wear
Pounamu is tough, but it isn't indestructible. A sharp knock against something hard — concrete, tile, another stone — can chip or crack it, so it's worth taking off before anything physical: sport, heavy lifting, working with your hands. Otherwise, wear it. Pounamu is at its best close to the skin, and the oils from regular wear only deepen its lustre over time.
Cleaning
A soft cloth and warm water is all it needs. Avoid soaps, chemicals or jewellery cleaners — they can dull the surface over time. If it's picked up grime, a gentle wipe with a damp cloth and a dry afterward will bring it straight back.
Heat & Sunlight
Keep it away from direct heat and prolonged sun. Rapid changes in temperature — like going from a hot car to cold water — can stress the stone internally, even if no crack shows straight away. Saunas, hot pools and dishwashers are worth avoiding too.
Cord and Fastenings
If your piece is on a cord, keep it dry where you can and let it air out fully after it's been damp. A worn or fraying cord is easy to replace — bring it back to us and we'll restring it for you.
Storage
When it's not being worn, a soft pouch or cloth is enough to keep it protected from scratches. Pounamu doesn't need to be locked away — it's a stone that's meant to be handled, worn and passed on.
Passing It On
Pounamu is traditionally gifted rather than bought for yourself, and it tends to hold the story of everyone who's worn it before. If your piece is ever passed to someone else, that history travels with it — no special care required, just the knowing.
